About Us

We're obsessed with the boring stuff: governance, boards, budgets, strategy & KPIs

MEET THE GLOBAL ADVISORY BOARD

Black Licorice benefits enormously from the experience and networks of its talented and committed advisors.

The rigorous fellowship emphasizes bulletproof budgets, clear KPIs that speak to the strategy, high-functioning boards governance and fundraising tactics—not as an evaluation course, but as a teaching course so founders can return to their teams, islands and provinces, as surrogate instructors, creating nation-wide impact.

OUR TEAM

We're obsessed with the idea of recruiting and betting on Indonesia's outliers.

Before Black Licorice Zack worked at the World Bank and Research Triangle Institute. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania. Originally from Iowa, he lives with his wife and three daughters—Audrey, Sienna and Emma—in Bali. They like making salsa and taking their dog Wrigley to the beach.

Mel trained as an architect, spent 5 years in retail & somehow became the person who likes spreadsheets, systems & getting things done. She oversees our portfolio & internal operations. Outside of work, she’s usually taking photos of things that catch her eye, planning her next vacation or looking for somewhere good to eat.

OUR LATEST WRITING

Scale Is a Myth! Embrace the Long Defeat!

By Zack Petersen

Last year at Skoll, I went for an early morning run along the Thames with a founder who had won it all. Every award. Every fellowship. She’d graced every stage. And she was exhausted. Not so much from the late-night cocktails in an ancient, low-lit library the night before, but the world she herself had created. The world of a development darling.
